Congratulations go out to the New Orleans Saints. After many years of being a perennial cellar dweller in the NFC, the Saints have made the state of Louisiana very proud.

Yes, some will say I’m simply jumping on the winning bandwagon but that’s not completely true. Many years ago, about 28 to be more specific, I resided in Belmont, California and my first wife (Jill) was a die hard San Francisco 49er fan. At this particular time in history there were two professional football leagues, the NFL and USFL. The east bay city of Oakland had two professional football teams, the Oakland Raiders and the Oakland Invaders. I mention this because the Invader quarterback was known as the the ragin’ cajun, Bobby Herbert.

Bobby Herbert

Herbert went on to become the starting quarterback of his hometown New Orleans Saints after the USFL folded.

During the mid-eighties, the 49ers would play New Orleans twice every year. This was during the hey day of Joe Montana and Dwight Clark winning NFC Championships and Super Bowls. Yes, the 49ers usually beat the Saints but rarely was the final score more than 3 points difference. The ragin’ cajun knew how to score points and the Saints defense always managed to keep the mighty 49ers within reach.

For the absolute fun of it, I’d always root for New Orleans knowing it would tweak the living daylights out of my now ex wife. Hey, somebody’s gotta play devils advocate, so why not me?

It’s now the fourth quarter with the Saints up by 14, I’m so nervous I cannot watch. Win or lose, the people of New Orleans and Saints fans around the world can be very proud of our football team. The aint’s are a thing of the past thanks to the leadership and courage of head coach Sean Payton and today’s starting quarterback Drew Brees.

Unbelievable, Manning’s picked off by number 22 Tracy Porter who returns the pick for a touchdown with 3:12 left in the game.

The New Orleans SAINTS HAVE WON the SUPER BOWL…

Congrats Archie, Sorry Peyton, nothing personal...
