Tonight’s Fiesta Bowl matched two undefeated teams on a second mission for perfection. Ranked number 3 in the nation was Texas Christian University in a rematch from last seasons Poinsettia Bowl against the Broncos of Boise State where TCU defeated the undefeated Broncos 17-16.
Tonight, using a trick play on their own 32 yard line, Boise State lined up on 4th. down when punter Kyle Brotzman hit wide-open Kyle Efaw (80) with a 30-yard strike with 9 minutes and change to play. The drive ended with a two-yard run play and a final score of Boise State 17, TCU 10. The Boise State Broncos have become the second school ever to go 14-0, joining Ohio State in 2002.
During the post game with Chris Rose and Coach Jimmy Johnson of Fox Sports, Jimmy said the unspoken word, “playoffs” in College Football. How can the NCAA continue to discriminate against NCAA Division 1Â football players? Discriminate? Yes, it’s 100% discrimination when college athletes from basketball, baseball and hockey have a playoff system where the coaches and teams compete for a national championship. If you’re in the dance you have a shot at winning it all. It shouldn’t matter if your playing on a field, court or in a rink.
Let’s see, it’s 2010 and the coaches, players and fans of NCAA Div. 1 College Football have to rely on some half-baked thing-a-ma-jig to analyze this stat with that stat with this difficulty of schedule with?…. on and on and on… We plug it into this computer and out pops an RPI and on and on and on… Would Duke’s head coach Mike Krzyzewski or, Louisville’s Rick Pitino or, Gonzaga’s Mark Few put up with this corporate–money crap? Hey, were playing for keeps… Let the coaches and players determine the final outcome, that’s why we play the games, isn’t it?
But, what about the money? We’d lose money if we let the coaches and players determine the outcome… Who’s number one? Are you sure? Two back-to-back undefeated seasons and a 17-10 Fiesta Bowl victory against the number 3 team in the nation. Number 1 Alabama plays number 2 Texas, the winner should play Boise State for the championship.
No, you like the corporate RPI thing-a-ma-jig? Here’s the official NCAA BCS formula. But, before I go, Congratulations go out to the 14-0, National Champion, Boise State Broncos.

The answer really is quite simple: some earn automatic berths, others are selected by the bowls. Basically there are four ways to qualify:
1. The top two teams in the final BCS Standings qualify automatically.
2. The champions of six conferences have annual automatic berths.
3. Other teams can qualify automatically as follows:
A. The highest-ranked champion from the MAC, MWC, WAC, Sun Belt or C-USA qualifies if it finishes in the top 12; (or top 16 if ranked higher than the champion of a conference that has an automatic berth)
B. Notre Dame qualifies if it finishes in the top eight.
4. If spots remain after the above teams are slotted, a bowl can select any other team that finishes in the top 14, but no more than two teams from a conference can participate.
That’s the Cliff’sNotes version. But it’s always useful to understand the entire novel, and so the full selection procedures are attached. As you will see, they include a handful of steps to address other scenarios.
The ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, and SEC earned their automatic qualification by virtue of contracts with the host bowls and by meeting performance standards. As agreed by all 11 conferences, the 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 regular seasons were evaluated using three criteria: rank of the highest-ranked team, rank of all conference teams and number of teams in the top 25. Those six met the standard.
The 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons will be evaluated to determine if a seventh conference achieves automatic qualification for the BCS games that will conclude the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Yadda, yadda, yadda… This whole BCS vs. Playoff’s debate is all about the money… Corporate deals and sold out stadiums and expensive TV ads and t-shirts and baseball caps and on and on and on… Why can’t the President or Congress or some federal judge put an end to this BS… Argue for discrimination and let the coaches and teams decide who’s national champion…

I would really like to see playoffs instituted.
I agree. I monitored ESPN and ESPN-2 yesterday to see how the corporate media would spin or objectively cover this issue. Straight up news shows like Sportscenter attempted to dodge the controversy while opinion shows delved a bit deeper.
The common 'media' theme concerning Boise State was their weak WAC conference schedule. However, the point I'm making is the fact that this excuse isn't used by members of the media when it applies to NCAA Basketball. So, why is there a double standard in division 1 college sports? In basketball, Cinderella can win it all. In football, Cinderella can go undefeated in two consecutive regular seasons, whoop the Pac-10 champion Oregon Ducks and Mountain West Conference champion TCU Horned Frogs and still be considered a second rate football team by the corporate mainstream elite.
